A Tale of Two Cakes
Last weekend Youngest was spoilt lovingly by her grand and godparents. Today she’s being indulged by us and, once she’s been to school and taken a Physics test (“How unfair is that?”) , we will have a giggle of teenage girls to pizza and a movie at our house. She is 15 today.
Sunday’s cake was a large version of Delia’s Lemon Curd cake: melting, lemony and tasteful.
Tonight’s is Barbie dressed in a coffee flavoured confection and dripping in Smarties. I haven’t made a Barbie cake since they were small, and never before for Youngest – a fact which she clearly felt I should put right! She’s not seen it yet. Barbie is hiding in the (cold) spare room. I think she will go down well - despite Eldest helpfully remarking that "She looks like a pineapple".

Wow, I've never seen a Barbie cake before. I'm surprised she didn't melt. Or did you have to cut circles of different sizes of cooked cake and build up her skirt?
Looks very impressive anyway, and happy birthday to your daughter. Hope she enjoys her birthday.
The Barbie cake is fabulous. I used to make and decorate all my son and daughter's birthday cakes when they were young but I never did a Barbie! I did a Slimer

My elder daughter is 27 today. I just heard from her two hours ago. She's going skating this evening at Somerset House.
It's a day for celebrations. My boss is 75 today.
I think she looks gorgeous! As mother of a son, I am rather sad to have never had the reason to make a Barbie cake. On the other hand... ;-)

Thank-you all for your kind words. You will be pleased to here that they loved the cake (and haven't heard of Carmen Miranda, though it was an apt description) and it took some time to summon up the willpower to cut into her!
For Sarah, and anyone else curious to know, Barbie's standing in a kitchen roll tube wrapped in cling film and I made two cakes from a 6 egg Victoria sponge mixture, one a 7" sandwich and the other a two pint mixing bowl (like the one needed for Eldest's hedgehog).
Eldest did helpful waitressing while The Nine ate and watched Some Like it Hot. They loved the film, possibly because it was the same era as The Boyfriend in which many of them performed. They did not know that Tony Curtis' 'funny accent' was an impersonation of Cary Grant... "Who?"...
I'm rubbish at baking and deeply envious of anyone who is good at it! Both cakes look fabulous!
