It was the immediate consequence of something they had just done and needed to be stopped. I never smacked for past misdeeds - and I always stopped at one. I think as a Service wife I was aware of being the sole parent often and I couldn't afford to lose control of myself. I consciously knew that I had to then distance myself by sending them to their rooms (if they were old enough) if I was still angry. At a certain age smacking stopped and reasoning began. I'm not proud to say I smacked but I didn't know how else you stopped a child quickly (before a full blown tantrum or a dangerous action)when they were too young to reason with.
